Description
For a period of time, an Underground even operated in the tiger’s jaws – inside Germany itself. The organization was small in scope and its activity relatively sparse, but even as such it is known that several Groups were in operation.
One of them was the Herbert Baum Group from Berlin, most of whose members were Jewish youths inclined towards Communism. They engaged in printing and dissemination of anti-Nazi leaflets and in providing political guidance. In May, 1942, they planted incendiary devices in a Berlin exhibit and caused fires. Most of them were caught and executed.
Another Group, by the name of “The Union for Peace and Freedom”, was a community organized by Werner Scharf and Hans Winkler. Its members circulated pamphlets and news compiled from Allied broadcasts. They planned to raid a prison, but informing led to the members’ arrest and execution.
About 100 young Jews partook in these Groups.
