Julian Meyer

Julian Meyer (18 August 1918 - 6 September 1993) was a law student who interrupted his studies to join the Union Defence Force. He served with the Transvaal Scottish Second Battalion, service number 32383. He was captured during the Battle of Tobruk, Libya, North Africa and  was sent to Italy to the prisoner of war camp, P.G. 54, Paso Corese, Fara Sabina where he spent a year. He then escaped but was recaptured by the Germans and sent to Germany to the work camp Stalag IV-A Arb. Kdo 1169,  Dresden, Germany. 'Julien Meyer, 2nd Transvaal Scottish, a law student and the cleverest man in camp, a brilliant scholar who learned to speak German fluently in record time. He was a great asset to us in that he was able to pick up news outside and translate it into English for us. He wrote a daily bulletin of news for our benefit'.1  When the Russians advanced into Germany, he managed to flee to the Allied Lines and was repatriated to England. He returned to South Africa in August 1945.
