Professor David Adler (born 22 July 1913 Port Elizabeth, South Africa), South African Medical Corps (S.A.M.C.) He was the son of Harris Adler (1874-1937) and Rose Adler (nee Friedman) of Port Elizabeth. He qualified as a doctor at the University of Cape Town. During World War Two, he served in the S.A.M.C. from 1942 to 1946. He was initially based at the Baragwanath Military Hospital, Johannesburg. The hospital was built at the request of, and funded by, the British Imperial Government in the early stages of the war, to treat troops from the Middle East Command. It began accepting patients in May 1942 after a relatively short construction period of 6 months. Dr Adler then served in Italy at the 8th South Africa Clearing Station, which dealt with casualties from the front lines and at the No. 107 General Hospital. He was mentioned in Dispatches. After the War, he was a member of the Jewish Ex-Service League. He married Zena Elkin in April 1946 and they had two children. He was the Senior Thoracic Surgeon, Johannesburg General Hospital, and the University of the Witwatersrand. In 1961, he and his family immigrated to Israel. He was the Professor of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery, Rambam Medical Centre, Haifa. Sources: South African Jewry 1976-77 Edition.
