Biography

Dr. Louis Leonard Alexander (9 October 1908 Beaconsfield (Kimberley) South Africa - 16 September 2004 East London, South Africa) service number 41945, South African Medical Corps, was the son of Alexander Zemachowitz Alexander (1879-1945) and Rachel Alexander (d. 1981). He was educated at Kimberley High School and St Bartholomew's Hospital, London. He married Lynette Pauline Brall born Smollan (1919- 2011) on the 24 November 1946. They had three children and the family lived in East London. He was a medical practitioner in East London. He was an Executive Member of the Jewish Ex-Service League and was active in the Medical Association of South Africa.

During World War Two, he enlisted in the Union Defence Force and served in the South African Medical Corp from 1940 to 1945. He initially served with the First Field Force Battalion June 1940, and then with the 12th Field Ambulance, 3rd Field Regiment Transvaal Horse Artillery (T.H.A) from 1941 to 1942. He was taken prisoner of war and was sent to Italy. He was listed at H 204 Italy - Military Hospital 204 P.M. 3450 Altamura, Italy.
