Biography

Major Hyman John James "Jimmy" Orkin (28 November 1907 South Africa - 4 March 1992 Johannesburg, South Africa) service number P179887 South African Air Force, known as James, was the son of Joseph Orkin (1869-1931) and Sarah Anna Orkin born Joffe (1877-1941). He was a solicitor.
During the Second World War he enlisted in the Union Defence Force and served from 1939 to 1945 in the South African Air Force, initially as First Lieutenant and then Major and Adjutant. He was Mentioned in Despatches for distinguished valorous service while serving with the South African Air Force in North Africa in January 1943.
He married Else Juliane Margarethe Orgler (1910-1987) in 1943. She was a Jewish refugee from Nazi Germany.
After the War, he and Else lived in Johannesburg. James practiced again as an attorney, notary and conveyancer, and the couple were jointly involved in repertory theatre and community service. Their three children were all open and active opponents of the post-war South African Nationalist Government's neo-Nazi policy of Apartheid, with their father's proud support.
